HONOLULU -- Federal Judge David Ezra ordered board members of Hui Malama I Kupuna to court next week to explain themselves. The group faces a fine and jail time for failing to tell the judge exactly who took part in reburying 83 Hawaiian artifacts in a Big Island cave and exactly where the items are located. The artifacts are at the core of a legal struggle between a number of Native Hawaiian claimants.Hui Malama provided limited information about the cave to the courts. However, it fears disclosing to the judge what he wants could lead to further disturbance of the site. Members said the cave has been sealed. They also maintain providing such information would be against their religious beliefs.
