Baby Born From Brain-Dead Woman

Doctors Use Woman's Organs To Treat 3 People

POSTED: 2:23 pm HST December 12, 2005

Doctors on Monday delivered an infant from a woman who has been brain-dead for weeks after her ex-boyfriend allegedly beat her.

Doctors and nurses kept Sarah Fay, 34, alive artificially for two weeks so that her baby could reach eight months in the womb. The extra time gave the infant a better chance to be strong enough to survive.

The father of the baby, Marwann Jackson, 24, has been charged with murder in the case. Jackson had a long police record with several violent crime convictions.

The baby boy was born at 10:50 a.m. at Queen's Medical Center. Fay planned to name the child Josiah. The family named him Josiah Darcy Fay. He is 3.5 pounds and 16.5 inches long. Doctors said the child is healthy and breathing mostly on his own with some assistance.

A medical team took the baby to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. Doctors said they expect the baby to be there for three weeks.

Sarah Fay was taken off of life support. Doctors were able to harvest her liver and two kidneys for three patients in need of the organs.
