A deal is in the works for a private organization to purchase the entire 1,800 acre Waimea Valley and keep all of it as park and preservation area, a source told KITV.

The National Audubon Society will officially make the offer at a City Council meeting Wednesday to purchase the entire valley, sources said.

The National Audubon Society has been running the park since the city took control of Waimea Valley in 2003 to begin condemnation proceedings.

Recently, Christian Wolffer, the owner of the park, made an offer to the city to try to avoid going to court. Wolffer's offer is to allow the city retain the 300 acres now reserved for the park in return for giving him the remaining 1,500 acres to subdivide into eight homes and an eco-lodge for tourists.

Council members originally were poised to accept Wolfer's offer Wednesday, but the proposal from the National Audubon Society is now expected to get a favorable reception.
