Mori Pays Tribute To Ehime Maru Victims
Prime Minister Visits Collision Site
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori paid tribute to the nine missing crew members of the Ehime Maru Tuesday.
Mori traveled by boat to the site of the Feb. 9 tragedy along with family members of four of the victims. The family members dropped flowers on the spot where the USS Greeneville struck the ship nine miles south of Diamond Head. The victims are presumed to be in the wreckage of the ship 2,000 feet underwater.
The prime minister also paid his respects to America's war dead by laying a wreath at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl before he departed for Tokyo.
Mori arrived in Honolulu early Tuesday morning from Washington, after a day of talks with President Bush.
Mori is expected to resign from office next month because of Japan's slumping economy and numerous political gaffes, such as deciding to finish a round of golf when he was notified of the Ehime Maru tragedy.
