Several hundred Waikiki residents and businesses lost their electricity Tuesday after a termite-damaged utility pole broke, according to Hawaiian Electric Co.

The pole was on Liliuokalani Avenue near Kuhio Avenue. It cracked at its base a little before noon and its weight pulled the top off another pole. No one was hurt although a parked car was seriously damaged.

Resident Anthony Perez said he had warned the electric company about termite damage to the pole.

HECO said the termite-damaged pole was on the list for replacement, but actually fell because an anchor holding a supporting wire failed.

The loss of electricity stranded some people in their high-rise apartments. HECO said it would take until evening to replace both poles and restore service.
