Waipahu Man Hacked To Death, Wife Injured

Police Arrest Son In Attack On Parents

POSTED: 8:53 pm HST November 19, 2005

Honolulu police arrested a 43-year-old man after his father was found killed and his mother critically injured.

Families who live on Niulii Street were shocked to learn of the attack. Grace Geronimo said the sounds of fighting woke her up at around 1 a.m.

"I heard yelling and screaming," Geronimo said.

She said the woman's screams sounded like she was in pain, but she was not sure what to think.

Police recovered a hatchet they believe to be the murder weapon. They did not have any word on a motive.

"I'm not sure. All we now is that the attack was unprovoked," police Capt. Frank Fujii said. "After committing the acts the 43-year-old suspect drove himself to the Pearl City Police Station."

Police arrest logs show that at 3:20 a.m. Mark Kawakami was booked on second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and an additional attempted murder in the first degree since the attack involved two people.

Police wouldn't say if drugs are involved.

Neighbors said police had been called to the home a number of times. They said the son had a history of violence.

"There were four that I remember, four fights and it involved one of the sons," neighbor Fran Paredes said.

Police said Kawakami had no prior convictions. Kawakami's mother, who was 76-years-old, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Neighbors said her husband, Gary, was an avid gardener, who was generous with his plants and pots.

"He is a really nice man. He never passes without waving," Paredes said.

Neighbors said they feel terrible for the family and do not know what to think.
