Hawaii Honors Veterans Across Islands

HONOLULU -- Celebrations and ceremonies honored America's veterans throughout Hawaii on Veterans Day.The 60th annual Veteran's Parade in Wahiawa was well attended and included veterans of many wars. The Wahiawa Lions Club featured the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines in Friday's parade.The parade honored veterans of wars, including soldiers such as Army reservist Spc. Louis Self, who just returned from Iraq."Being a combat veteran, I feel proud to be an American serving my country as a reservist," Self said.Sgt. Ronnie Mason has been overseas three times and will be among 7,000 Schofield Barracks' soldiers who will be deployed sometime next year.He was happy to see Friday's show of support."It's good to recognize a vet. Sometimes they don't get recognized for what they do. They deserve a lot of credit. They deal with a lot leaving their families to do what they do," Mason said.Disabled American Veterans were honored at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. The 55th annual Massing of the Colors brought out hundreds of people, including Hawaii's top officials to pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the armed forces.The Lieutenant governor led a procession of flower wreaths, remembering those who selflessly gave their lives.Those recognized today included veterans from World War II to the current war being fought in the Middle East.The ceremony concluded with the traditional playing of "Taps" and a missing man flyover with helicopters courtesy of the Air National Guard.
