Officials Say Someone Smuggled Marsupial Onto Flight

POSTED: 2:59 pm HST November 10, 2005

Officials said a marsupial found on a charter flight from Las Vegas to Honolulu on Monday was smuggled on board.

Ground crews found a pouch and a package of animal food discarded in one of the plane's bathrooms.

A passenger was able to catch the 10-inch long sugar glider, which was running loose in the cabin.

Sugar gliders are illegal in Hawaii. They are omnivores that feed on insects, nectar and sap of eucalyptus and acacia trees, which include Hawaii's native koa.

Officials asked that passengers onboard Monday's Omni Flight 108 from Las Vegas who have information about the person who smuggled the sugar glider onto the aircraft should call the Department of Agriculture's pest hot line at 586-PEST.
