A Maine man accused of hiding under an outhouse tank to spy on women pleaded no contest to trespassing and disorderly conduct charges on Monday.

Gary Moody, 45, of Gardner, Maine, previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, but he changed his plea because, his lawyer said, the incident had become embarrassing.

In June, a teenage girl told police that she saw Moody hiding in the sewage tank of a women's outhouse along the Kancamagus Highway.

When authorities questioned Moody, he told them he had climbed into the tank to find his lost wedding ring, but when the tank was pumped, no ring was found.

"It really shook a lot of people," Carroll County sheriff Capt. Jon Hebert said.

Prosecutors asked for a 30-day suspended sentence, along with a $1,000 fine and $700 in restitution, the amount it cost to have the tank pumped.

The judge also felt that Moody should be required to undergo some sort of court-ordered treatment, but that may be up to the courts in his home state of Maine to decide. He still has legal issues to deal with there.

As part of the negotiated plea the disorderly conduct charge against Moody was placed on file, and the judge ordered him to stay off U.S. Forest Service property in New Hampshire for a period of two years.
