Aloha Stadium Alcohol Ban Debate Continues

Tailgaters have a reprieve from the proposed alcohol ban at Aloha Stadium.

Turns out the stadium authority might have moved too quickly with its recommendation of a parking lot ban.

It all started a few months ago when Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona said he'd like to see alcohol banned inside and outside the stadium. This came after some rowdy behavior and fights were blamed on intoxicated fans.

But the party can continue at Aloha Stadium parking lot, at least for now.

Sunshine laws may have been violated at the Stadium Authority's Sept. 29 meeting when it recommended banning booze in the parking lot but not in the stadium.

"I don't understand why they would ban alcohol in the parking lot but allow it inside the stadium," said University of Hawaii student Ryan Bodine. "It's an economic thing. The school wants to make money."

The stadium's beer vendors have contracts in place until 2011, but the Stadium Authority will vote again late this month. The earliest a ban could be in place is mid-December, after the last UH home game.
