Family Continues Search For Man Missing For 1 Year

POSTED: 4:10 pm HST October 6, 2005

One year after a Pearl City man disappeared without a trace, his family is still searching for answers.

Gilbert Caravallo was last seen one year ago Thursday. His location remains a mystery.

His sister, Janey Caravallo, said she is desperate for answers.

Janey set up a Web site, FindGilbert.com. She has also written letters to everyone from the police chief to Gov. Linda Lingle to President George W. Bush.

The family received an anonymous tip on its Web site saying Gilbert Caravallo may be at the end of Kaahele Road in Aiea. On Wednesday, his mother left flowers in his memory about 5-10 miles up the trail.

Janey Caravallo said police spent a week searching the area last year, but turned up nothing.

Gilbert Caravallo was last seen at his mother's townhouse on Kamahao Place in Pearl City. He left with a friend named Larry to walk to the store.

"Another friend of theirs drove by, Hans Van Belkum. Gilbert Caravallo and Van Belkum decided they were thinking about going in the mountains and shooting guns. Larry wanted no part of that," Janey Caravallo said.

Janey Caravallo said Van Belkum told investigators he dropped Gilbert back off at his mother's home.

"He needs to know that he can come home no matter what -- no questions asked. We just want him to come home. At this point, one year later, it's looking extremely grim," Janey Caravallo said.

Police ask that anyone with information about Gilbert Caravallo call the Honolulu Police Department's missing persons detail.
