Sub Investigation Could WidenAdmiral Wants Two Other Sailors InvestigatedThe investigation into the collision of a U.S. submarine and a Japanese fishing vessel could be spreading, according to ABC News sources.
ABC News sources said that Capt. Bob Brandhuber could be named as a party to the
Navy's court of inquiry.
He was the senior officer on board the USS Greeneville when it crashed into the Ehime Maru.
Brandhuber was not a crew member, but he was the host to the 16 VIP guests onboard. That makes
him responsible for ensuring the visitors didn't interfere with sub operations.
Brandhuber is the chief of staff for Adm. Albert Konetzni Jr., and actually went on the Greeneville the day of the collision in place of Konetzni.
According to ABC News Konetzni had a last minute conflict and sent Brandhuber as his replacement. The Washington Times reported that the admiral now wants Brandhuber to be scrutinized by the court.
The Times report said that Konetzni wanted to know if Brandhuber should've intervened to correct crew errors, since Brandhuber was the highest ranking officer on board.
ABC News sources also said that the sub's fire control technician could also be under investigation.
He told federal investigators that the guests onboard prevented him from manually plotting sonar contacts near the Greeneville.
