Aloha Stadium Authority Considers Alcohol BanUH Students Protest Proposed BanPOSTED: 9:59 am HST August 25,
2005 HONOLULU -- Aloha Stadium authority officials are meeting Thursday to hear testimony on a proposed alcohol ban at University of Hawaii football games. The meeting comes a day after student leaders held a tailgate on campus to protest the proposed ban.Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona is leading the initiative to stop drinking at the stadium because of fighting, rowdy behavior and underage drinking. He is expected to testify Thursday along with educators, business leaders, students and football fans. The proposal was made in reaction to several well-publicized fights involving unruly fans. It's a move endorsed by the Honolulu Police Department. The university's student government opposes the ban, saying it would be an attack on their rights. Others said it's not practical because of contracts the stadium has with concessionaires and other legal issues.Stopping the sale of alcohol could cost the university up to $200,000 in revenue from vendors.UH Interim President David McClain said he supports the proposed ban.
