Mayor Pushing For Ewa Ferry ServicePOSTED: 5:41 pm HST August 12,
2005 Oahu's proposed new rail transit system is still a ways away, but Friday, the mayor talked about another "quicker fix" for traffic woes he hopes to have up and running by next summer.Five years ago, the state attempted an Ewa commuter ferry service, but with too few riders, the project failed. Now, the city is going to try its own pilot project with three ferry runs each morning and three in the evening from Kalaeloa to town and back.Ewa resident Pat Monroe was an avid rider on the first ferry and is overjoyed to hear boat service is coming back."I think it is absolutely great news," said Monroe. "I was just thinking about it yesterday. When are we going to start being able to use this ferry again?"The mayor said the city will put out a request for proposals in October and expects to have the ferry service by next summer.
