UH Football Games May Be Played At Dry StadiumPOSTED: 5:46 am HST August 5,
2005 HONOLULU -- Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona says alcohol consumption could be banned at Aloha Stadium during University of Hawaii football games as soon as the season-opener.That's Sept. 3 against Southern California.Ainoa's proposal calls for a total ban on alcohol, which would mean no drinking in the stadium's parking lot or inside the stadium.Aiona said a ban would help curb incidents of violence and rowdiness at Warrior football games. Some Warrior fans told KITV-News they weren't sure a ban would keep people from drinking. "If people want to drink, they are going to do it anyway. They're going to find a way to sneak it in. I don't think it will eliminate the drunkenness of the game or even come close to decreasing it," said one man."People tailgate beforehand, so you're still going to get people under the influence at the game and I don't think there's anyway of stopping that," said another fan.Aiona said he plans to talk to the Aloha Stadium Authority board at its Aug. 25 meeting. The authority, not the university, controls alcohol sales at the stadium. Aiona's drive to end drinking during Warriors games has the support of Gov. Linda Lingle. University interim President David McClain says he favors a ban, but feels the effort should begin inside the stadium.U-H football players reported to training camp Friday.
