2005 HONOLULU -- Rescue teams Tuesday found a missing hiker who spent three nights in the mountains above Nuuanu. An Army helicopter crew retrieved her just after 3 p.m.The woman's hike started in Manoa Falls on Sunday. Rescuers found her on a trail near Konahoanui Ridge.Fire crews spotted Karis Johns, 27, at about 2:30 p.m. She had laid out a red jacket and was waving at rescuers. The day started with Honolulu fire rescue crews searching by air and on the ground. Day three of the search for Johns proved difficult because of heavy cloud cover and strong winds.Fire crews were concentrating their search in the upper Nuuanu area after police detectives got new information from Johns' cellular phone carrier and from details she described in her call to 911 on Sunday.Johns told dispatchers that she was hurt, stuck and lost."I walked up the ridge all the way toward Kaneohe, yeah. And then the trail fizzled out. So now, I'm like following a creek bed all the way down," Johns said in her 911 call."From the peak, there's a small little valley that comes down where the water falls normally comes down. She was kind of sitting in one of those," fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said. The conditions were too intense for the Honolulu Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter. An Army medivac helicopter was brought in to assist in the rescue. With in minutes, Army crews had Johns safely inside and on her way to the Queen's Medical Center.
