$700,000 Available For Inmates Held In Prison Too Long

POSTED: 4:18 pm HST July 25, 2005

Lawyers trying to find prisoners eligible for part of a cash settlement are having a hard time finding former inmates to give money to.

The state had agreed to pay about $700,000 for cases where people were held in prison longer than they were supposed to be.

The American Civil Liberties Union estimated there would be hundreds of claims.

So far, fewer than 200 former prisoners have met the deadline to file.

A lawyer looking for claimants said it could be that former prisoners are just not easy to find. He hopes the court will give them more time.

Any money left over after prisoner claims are paid will go to University of Hawaii law school.
