Gov. Linda Lingle said Friday she is going to veto the transit tax bill. However, she said lawmakers can come back into special session Tuesday and change the bill to have the counties collect the tax.

She said she would then gladly sign the bill the same day. Otherwise, it's dead.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said he met with the governor Thursday to tell her he will figure out a way for the county to collect the tax.

"In the spirit of compromise, I am willing to look at ways the county could collect this, (general excise tax) portion that is going to be allocated for us for this transit system," Hannemann said.

The tax bill would give Hawaii's counties the ability to hike the GET from 4 percent to 4.5 percent.

Legislative leaders sent a letter to the governor Friday pledging to address her concerns in the next legislative session. However, the governor said she is not willing to wait until next year and wants her concerns addressed next week.
