Brush Fires Exhausting Resources On Leeward Oahu

Brush fires on Oahu combined with the summer heat has put Oahu's water supply in danger, according to Board of Water Supply officials.

Officials are asking Leeward Oahu residents to conserve water.

Arid brush and fireworks has caused a record 275 fires so far this year on Oahu's leeward side.

The Honolulu fire and police departments are exhausting resources to battle the blazes and find suspects.

"I just think we've been fortunate. We haven't had any real property damage or loss of life. That's what we're really concerned about," HPD Maj. Mike Tamashiro said.

With several more weeks of summer still ahead, an already dry leeward coast could get even worse.

"Our water supply is showing signs of a little bit of stress," BWS spokeswoman Su Shin said.

The Board of Water Supply Friday issued an appeal for Leeward Oahu residents to conserve water.

"We are not telling people not to use water. What we're simply saying is to use water, but use it wisely and not to waste it," Shin said.

The Board of Water Supply said it's pumping about 1 million gallons a day more than the same period last year. In June, the leeward side reportedly used almost 90 million gallons of water.

"We are seeing island wide the pumpage going up. So, it's not just on the leeward side, but obviously it's very dry on that side of the island," Shin said.

Although water is not yet at a critical level, it's possible Oahu could go back to drought conditions and conservation efforts like that of two years ago.

The Board of Water Supply encourages everyone to make water conservation a way of life, not just a summertime activity.
