Rare Kamehameha IV Document Returned To IslandsBuyer Hopes 134-Year-Old Deed Will Be Placed On DisplayPOSTED: 4:45 pm HST June 21, 2005 HONOLULU -- A rare document signed and sealed by King Kamehameha IV arrived back in Hawaii Tuesday. The new owner wants everyone in Hawaii to be able to see it.John Williamson, the Director of Admissions at Mid Pacific Institute, opened the specially delivered package Tuesday.King Kamehameha IV signed the Maui land deed in 1862. "This is the signature of King Kamehameha the fourth, and the date, the royal seal in here," Williamson pointed out.He found the rare document while surfing the Internet. As soon as he was sure it was authentic, he bought it immediately. He won't say how much he paid."I thought it was important to bring a document that's part of Hawaii, and the history of Hawaii and our nation of Hawaii back to it's own place," Williamson said. When King Alexander Liholiho Kamehameha signed the deed, Hawaii was a nation. Liholiho, a grandson of King Kamehameha the Great, ruled Hawaii from 1854-1863. When he died he was just 29.The monarch left a lasting impact on the islands, according to Thomas C. Cummings of the Bishop Museum."Queen's hospital is a result of that legacy coming from him," Cummings said.Liholiho and his wife Emma started the Queen's Medical Center by setting aside lands and raising money.Mid Pacific Institute's administrator says the next step is to decide what happens to the document."We'll decide in the coming weeks what to do. I hope I'm only the caregiver of the documents for a few weeks," Williamson said.He hopes it will be on display somewhere, soon, for all of Hawaii to see.
