Police Warn Of Sub Victim Fund Scam

Victims Being Called By Phone

Honolulu police Thursday warned the public that someone or a group of people have been soliciting people over the phone for money to help the victims' families of the sunken Japanese ship the Ehime Maru.

Local Japanese radio station KZOO said that at least three people called Wednesday to tell their DJs that they had been solicited over the phone.

Officials wanted the public to know that the legitimate Ehime Maru fund is only taking donations at branches of First Hawaiian Bank. (Click here for information on the fund.)

Interested donors may contact the Japan-America Society at 524-4450 to verify further information about organizations that have joined the effort.
