OHA Responds To State Audit

Former Chairman Hee Submits Own Reply

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs submitted its official response Monday to the most critical audit ever of OHA.

The audit, conducted by state auditor Marion Higa, said that OHA trustees have failed in its mission to improve the conditions of Hawaiians.

OHA chairwoman Haunani Apoliona would not discuss the criticisms in the still confidential draft of the audit, only OHA's 30-page official response.

"We agree," Apoliona said. "Strategic planning is critical and now the trustees are poised and ready to move forward with that planning."

But former OHA chairman Clayton Hee is submitting two his own responses to the audit. Hee said that one of those responses was approved by five other trustees, but which Apoliona said was not the official response of OHA.

"There are things in (the audit) that are either misleading or false," Hee said.
