Liquor Commission Announces Fee Increases

POSTED: 5:02 pm HST April 27, 2005

The Honolulu Liquor Commission has told all 1,300 liquor licensees on Oahu that their liquor fees will be increased, some by as much as 700 percent.

The commission acted without getting City Council approval, according to Councilman Charles Djou.

Djou said he cannot think of a single government agency less deserving of increased funding than the Liquor Commission.

The commission has been the subject of eight criminal corruption convictions and is being investigated by the FBI.

The City Council's Budget Committee deferred action on giving the Liquor Commission the power to increase its fees.
