Standardized testing of students at Waianae Intermediate School has been halted after the Department of Education learned that eighth graders were given some test questions and answers before taking the test.

Schools Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto said some of the school's students may have to retake some or all portions of the test.

The department has begun an investigation.

Hamamoto said it appeared to be an isolated incident. But she notified complex-area superintendents and asked them to contact all principals to determine if there are other incidents.

Hamamoto said she is aware of concerns about how difficult the tests are. But she says that doesn't make cheating acceptable.

Waianae Intermediate testing coordinator Elten Lau said the school was already doing an internal investigation after teachers complained about review sheets they were given to help prep students immediately before taking the tests.

Lau said he is uncertain of the source of the review sheets.
