Legislators Consider Law Targeting Excessive Speeding

POSTED: 3:15 pm HST April 5, 2005

State lawmakers are considering a bill to make excessive speeding a crime.

Police say more than a third of the nearly 100 fatal crashes in Hawaii in the last two years were caused by excessive speeding.

The bill would make it a petty misdemeanor to drive 25 mph over the speed limit or to drive 80 mph or more anywhere.

"What this does, it gives the court the advantage of imposing a misdemeanor on the person doing it. Not only a fine, but they are also charged with a crime. So, I think it sends an important message that you just can't walk away with a fine, that your record will be tarnished with a misdemeanor charge," state Transportation Director Rod Haraga said.

Under the proposal, excessive speeders would also have to pay up to $1,000 in fines, lose their driver's license for a month and either go to jail for at least two days or do 36 hours of community service work.

Currently, speeders are only required to pay fines and police say that is not enough of a deterrent.
