Council Set To Vote On Leasehold Conversion Repeal

POSTED: 10:53 am HST January 26, 2005

The Honolulu City Council will take a final vote on a measure Tuesday that would repeal mandatory conversion of leasehold condominiums.

Condo leaseholders own their units, but not the land under them.

The 1991 leasehold conversion law forces land owners to sell them the land.

Critics of the leasehold conversion, such as Kamehameha Schools and the Queen Lili'uokalani Trust, feel they should not have to sell their land.

The question now is whether to allow leaseholders already in the process of obtaining ownership of their land to continue.
