POSTED: 11:14 am HST December 14, 2004

A Pearl City police officer is in federal custody after being arrested Friday for possession of more than 500 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

Court documents unsealed Monday show Officer Harold Cabbab Jr. was arrested after his elaborate plan to rip off drug dealers was secretly recorded by undercover immigration and customs agents.

Cabbab suggested he and the undercover agent could make $100,000 each by posing as police officers while robbing drug dealers, according to an affidavit.

In the end, paperwork was made to show a truck was shipped to Hawaii then fake methamphetamine was placed in the truck and eventually transferred to a storage locker.

Court documents show Cabbab and the informant then broke into the storage locker and took the drugs, which Cabbab believed to be 20 pounds of ice.

Cabbab may be a familiar name to many sports fans in Hawaii. He was a player on the University of Hawaii's baseball team. For the past 10 years he's been an officer with HPD most recently assigned to the Pearl City Station.

A police spokeswoman said he's currently on leave.

Also in court documents, Cabbab told the undercover agent about a previous drug rip off where he acted like he was on official police business when he stole 10 pounds of marijuana from another man.

Cabbab will remain in federal custody at least until his detention hearing, which is scheduled for Dec. 16.
