Officials said two college students lived in the fifth-floor apartment. They were not home when the fire broke out.

The two brothers who live in the studio were just finishing a day of classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Daniel Gatewood arrived home to a panicked younger brother.

"I just started shaking and I'm just thankful my brother wasn't in it. I was glad to hear his voice call me out. I was just really shaky and I didn't know what to think," Gatewood said.

Gatewood and his brother are from Guam and lost everything in the unit, their clothes, personal belongings, beds, furniture and more.

"Basically it's just lost, a good chunk of my four years is lost from a fire," Gatewood said.

The two are left with just the clothes they are wearing and the backpacks they took with them to school.

Fire officials believe the fire started in or around the apartment's entertainment center. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
