HONOLULU -- University of Hawaii officials said all classes at its Manoa campus will be cancelled Monday because of flooding damage to several buildings caused by heavy rains.
UH officials said Hamilton Library and the Biomedical Sciences building sustained the most damage. Tons of rare an important map collections and documents stored in the basement were destroyed.
"It's certainly an event of significant destruction of these documents," interim UH President David McClain said.
Honolulu police said traffic into and out of Manoa Valley was closed Saturday night because of flooding caused by heavy rains. The storm dumped up to 10 inches in Manoa overnight.
Three cars parked on Woodlawn Drive near the Manoa Shopping Center were swept away in what witnesses estimated to be 4 to 5 feet of water. Five other cars parked farther up the street were also swept away.
The flooding at Woodlawn Drive was particularly bad because a bridge over Manoa Stream became clogged with debris.
In the heart of Manoa the rain came so quickly, people trying to get home were stopped by Mother Nature's force.
Several cars in front of Noelani Elementary School were submerged. The school itself is also flooded.
Firefighters found themselves waist high in flood waters, helping stranded people navigate the flooded area.
Mud also lined the roads, making it difficult to get around.
Homes along Lowrey Drive near the Manoa Park also succumbed to the heavy rains. Many people living in Manoa Valley evacuated from their homes and will spent the night in a shelter at the Manoa Recreation Center.
Manoa Stream turned into raging rapids.

Forecasters said other heavy shower cells developed as the storm moved over the Koolau mountains.
In addition to Manoa Valley, other areas hard hit by the bad weather included Waimanalo, Kailua, Maunawili, Nuuanu Valley and Kalihi Valley.
