HONOLULU -- A local grassroots organization is calling for a boycott of the electronic voting machines in the upcoming general election.

Members of Safe Vote Hawaii Thursday were cautioning voters against using the electronic voting machines because they are paperless.

"Electronic voting machines, which do not provide a paper trail, cannot be audited in a valid way. If you cannot audit an electronic machine, you are no way assured of vote safety that your vote will be counted," Safe Vote Hawaii spokesman Jason Forester said.

The electronic voting machines were introduced in last month's primary elections. They were developed to assist disabled voters, but all voters are allowed to use them.

Rex Quidilla, from the state's Office of Elections, said he is confident the electronic machines are secure and auditable. He said there is no evidence that proves the machines are unreliable.

About 7,000 people used the electronic machines in the primary.
