Police: Stolen Car Driven In Ex-Chief's CrashNakamura To Remain In HospitalPOSTED: 3:25 pm HST September 30, 2004 HONOLULU -- The driver who hit former Police Chief Michael Nakamura in Mililani Wednesday afternoon was driving a stolen car, according to police.Nakamura is at the Queen's Medical Center in stable condition. It will be a couple of days before Nakamura is released from the hospital, officials said.A car hit Nakamura as he tried to cross Lanikuhana Avenue in Mililani. He suffered two broken legs in the collision. Police said Nakamura was in the crosswalk and was thrown from his motorized scooter.The driver initially left the scene, but about two hours later turned himself in to security guards at Mililani Town Center.Police said Anthony Pearce II hid the car in a friend's garage. Officers arrested Pearce for failure to render aid, driving without a license and auto theft.Pearce has no prior convictions, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.Nakamura was Honolulu police chief from 1990-1997. Nakamura started using a motorized scooter in 1997 after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.Since his retirement, Nakamura served on the Board of Education and most recently worked as campaign chairman for Honolulu Prosecutor Peter Carlisle's re-election campaign.
