A man is in police custody following a hit-and-run crash that injured former Honolulu Police Chief Michael Nakamura Wednesday.

Police said the suspect, a Mililani resident in his 20s, confessed to hitting the former HPD chief and is awaiting charges for failure to render aid and driving without a license.

Investigators say the driver initially fled the scene of the accident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. along Lanikuhana Avenue in Mililani.

The man turned himself into security at the Mililani Town Center two hours later.

Police also said the man was driving this white Nissan when he hit Nakamura.

Investigators believe the former chief was riding his motorized scooter and was crossing the street near the "Long John Silver" restaurant when he was hit.

Nakamura was thrown from his scooter and knocked to the ground, police said.

Witnesses called for help and say the driver of the white Nissan took off on Lanipa'a Street.

Investigators said the driver hid the car friend's garage before turning himself into authorities.

Nakamura remains at Queen's Medical Center this morning with two fractured legs.

His condition has been upgraded to stable.
