Schofield Soldier Killed On Duty In Iraq

A soldier based at Schofield Barracks was killed while on duty in Iraq Thursday.

Spc. Joseph Herndon II, 21, of Derby, Kan., died of a gunshot wound while on guard duty.

Herndon was part of the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division. He had been awarded the Purple Heart twice since he arrived in Iraq.

He enlisted in the Army in July 2002. He was assigned to Hawaii in November 2002.

Herndon will be buried in Kansas, according to Army officials.

Officials are investigating the shooting.

Herndon is the 14th Hawaii-related death in the Middle East since the war in Afghanistan and Iraq began.
