Hawaii Senators Battle To Keep Akaka Bill Alive

POSTED: 4:19 pm HST July 9, 2004

Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye are trying to find another way to force a floor vote on the Native Hawaiian recognition bill.

Earlier this week, Akaka and Inouye had hoped to piggyback the issue on a class action bill, but the move hit a political snag.

Late Thursday night, Senate majority leader Bill Frist pulled the class action bill, effectively blocking all attempts to amend the legislation.

Akaka and Inouye have until October to get the federal recognition issue to the floor. Otherwise, they have to start the process again next session.
