Only two people have claimed property that was cleared from city sidewalks and parks this month, according to the city.

Green plastic bins hold property that belongs to dozens of homeless campers who were cleared from parks and sidewalks in Moiliili on Jan. 10.

They included the Old Stadium Park area, Moiliili Field and Pawaa Park areas.

The property also comes from homeless camps cleared from Iwilei Road and Kuwili Street on Jan. 19.

"Most of it is clothing. There's some clothing, some bedding, there were some tents," said Tyler Sugihara of the city's Facility Maintenance Baseyard in Halawa. There were also strollers, wagons and small pieces of furniture sitting next to rows of plastic bins.

"There are some personal items. Certainly, any kind of paperwork with their names on top. We have their medications," Sugihara said. Those items are stored elsewhere.

City crews also found some crystal meth pipes which are not stored at the baseyard, Sugihara said.

And anything of value will be appraised and go through the city's auction process if unclaimed, Sugihara said.

For security purposes, the city asked KITV4 not to reveal the exact location of the property storage area. On Friday, personal property in 32 plastic bins remained.

"We're open to having them claim them at any time at no charge. If it exceeds the 30 days then we'll arrange for the disposal through our sister agency, the Environmental Services," Sugihara said.

But overall, the city said its effort to respect the personal belongings of homeless campers who are cleared from sidewalks and parks – is working.

"A lot of people, you know, have come to us to express their appreciation because they're getting their sidewalks and their parks back," Sugihara said.

Property cleared from the Moiliili and Iwilei areas can still be claimed by calling 768-3600 and making an appointment to retrieve your personal items.
