HONOLULU -- The Salvation Army Kroc Center Hawaii is the largest community center of its kind in the state and opens its doors to the public on Saturday. The $133 million state-of-the-art facility is on a 15-acre campus located off Kualaka'i Parkway in Kapolei. The numbers are impressive: a 14,000 square foot fitness center, 7,532 square foot conference center, 500-seat performance art center, two giant water slides, one Olympic-size pool, a café and preschool -- with a projection of serving 2,000 people a day at the Kroc Center Hawaii."They can work out, they can learn sports, they can get education enrichment, they can learn music, they can learn art, things that are not available so much in the community any more," said Laura Kay Rand, development director for the Kroc Center Hawaii.Kroc Center Hawaii is built from a $1.8 billion donation made to the Salvation Army from Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc. It's one of 27 Kroc Centers being built across the country -- with the idea of being a place where people young and old can learn, play, grow and be inspired."Mrs. Kroc really had this passion for the under served and she wanted to make sure kids, in particular, had an opportunity that they normally wouldn't have had to find whatever it is, that spark, that potential," said Maj. Phil Lum, Administrator and Corps Officer for the Salvation Army.Six years of planning and two years of construction plus $23 million in local fund raising and private donations went into making the facility a reality."Mrs. Kroc really wanted to make sure that if a community received a grant to build a Kroc Center that the community would support it," said Lum.Support isn't hard to find. Nearly 1,000 people have already signed up for a membership to the center. The center officially opens for business Feb. 1st. A dedication ceremony and open house for the Kroc Center Hawaii begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
