HONOLULU -- Forecasters at the National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch for Maui and the Big Island until 4 p.m. Monday.
Parts of the Big Island are already saturated with recent rains. That can increase the chances of flooding. The Kohala, Hamakua, Hilo and Puna districts are the most susceptable to flooding, according to NWS officials.
Authorities closed several roads on the Big Island because of flooding. Authorities closed Highway 270 in Kohala and Highway 19 in Hamakua, Civil Defense officials said. Police are diverting motorists onto Saddle Road.
Radar showed heavy rains hitting those areas Monday morning. Gauges indicate that rain fell at a rate of more than an inch an hour at about 7:30 a.m.
