Hawaii's homeless population grew by just over 6 percent in the past year, according to a new survey released by the state's Department of Human Services.

The report said that the number of homeless people in the state on Jan. 25 was 6,188. That is up from 5,834 people the same time one year ago.

By county, the report said Maui showed a large jump in the number of people living in the streets. Organizers said the number could be due to improved counting methods by outreach coordinators.

There were slight increases in Kauai and Hawaii counties, and officials said the number in Honolulu dropped.
