Governor Appoints Entire New Board Of Education In One Action

HONOLULU -- Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed nine members of the Board of Education Wednesday, replacing the elected school board under a constitutional change approved by the voters last November.Abercrombie's appointees include former television anchor Kim Gennaula, who left television to become an executive at Kapiolani Health Foundation.He also reappointed Don Horner, CEO of First Hawaiian Bank, and named Horner chairman of the board.
Other Board of Education Nominees:
Welsey Lo, CEO of Maui Memorial Medical Center
Brian DeLima, Hilo attorney and former member of the Hawaii County Council
Nancy Budd, Kauai attorney and member of the Kauai Planning and Action Alliance Public Education Action Team and President of Kauai District PTSA
Jim Williams, a former executive with HSTA, the state teachers' union, and retired administrator of the Hawaii Employer-Union Benefits Trust Fund, which provides health benefits for public workers
Charlene Cuaresma, Associate Director of the Graduate Professional Access Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
Cheryl Kauhane Lupenui, former CEO of YWCA of Oahu
Keith Amemiya, Executive Administrator and Secretary of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii and former head of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association
The governor said he did not appoint any of the former board members, other than Horner, because he wanted to give the appointed board a clean slate.He also said the board and he agreed that current Schools Superintendent, Kathryn Matayoshi should be retained.The board, pending Senate confirmation, has set its first meeting for April 26.In November, voters approved and lawmakers passed bills changing the school board from being elected to appointed.
