HONOLULU -- Demonstrators at the state capital voiced their concerns Saturday hoping lawmakers on Capital Hill hear their message.Planned Parenthood Hawaii provides women with accessible reproductive health care, giving financial help to women needing health exams, mammograms and birth control among other services. The national health care provider also supports a woman’s right to an abortion.A week ago, the Republican-dominated U.S. House of Representatives voted to end federal funding, which could possibly eliminate hundreds of millions of dollars for preventative health services.“The health and well being of woman, young woman and elderly woman who really need the reproductive health care that we provide on an annual basis to millions of them, is considered to be used as a budgetary chip,” said CEO of Planned Parenthood Hawaii, Andrea Anderson. The pro-abortion rights group believes its position on abortion is a major factor on why the funding is in jeopardy.Anti-abortion activist Margaret Scow said any funding towards abortion is a waste of money and should go to pay for adoptions and early childhood programs.“I think they are cutting everyone across the table, I don’t think they are picking on Planned Parenthood, although the statistics show that over 73 percent of Americans are against taxpayers funding abortions,” said Scow.Anderson said Hawaii Sens. Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye, both Democrats, don't support cutting funding but have not gone as far to say how they will vote. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill in the next couple of weeks.
