Police Will Close Roadways During President's Travel

President George W. Bush will make his first visit to Hawaii on Thursday. It will be his final stop in what has been a six-nation tour of Asia.

When he arrives on Oahu, the president is expected to travel by motorcade, rather than by helicopter, which could affect you.

Honolulu police and the Secret Service are coordinating safe passage for the president as he travels the road. Motorists unlucky enough to be in the area will likely experience a delay.

When President Bill Clinton visited Hawaii back in November 1994, he traveled by both helicopter and by motorcade.

When traveling by road, law enforcement usually chooses freeways over side streets. For obvious security reasons, no one is saying what route Bush will travel.

Standard procedure calls for the Honolulu Police Department to close the freeway a section at a time, a practice called "leapfrogging." As the motorcade passes through, the road will be reopened.

At this time, little is being disclosed about the various places Bush will visit while he's in the islands. But the Secret Service said much planning has gone into where and when he will travel so as to cause the least inconvenience possible.

HPD is expected to increase the number of officers on the road on Thursday, but a police spokeswoman declined comment on that.
