Authorities Investigate Infant's Death

YMCA Employee Describes Mother's Anguish

POSTED: 8:54 am HST October 15, 2003

The Honolulu medical examiner is holding off on the cause of death of a 10-month-old girl found dead in a car.

The baby was found unresponsive after spending more than an hour in the heat of her mother's parked car.

The baby was left in a car that was parked in the parking lot of the YMCA in Kailua. The baby's mother found the child unresponsive. She rushed her daughter inside the facility.

"And I heard hysterical cries," said Joanne Holmberg of the Kailua YMCA. "As I got up to investigate, a woman was coming in the lobby at the same time holding her baby. She was hysterical. It was a horrible thing. She said things quickly. What she said was, 'I forgot, my baby was in the car. It's usually at the baby sitter.' And she said, 'I think she might be dead.'"

Paramedics rushed the baby to Castle Medical Center. CPR at the YMCA did not revive the child and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The baby's mother was not an employee of the YMCA, but she was a physical therapist who used the facility's pool to work with patients.

Police said the baby was in the car for six hours. The mother said she had forgotten to drop her daughter off at the babysitter in the morning, and she apparently didn't realize the baby was in the car when she went from her first job to her second job at the YMCA.

"The mom was giving a class, the class was from noon to 1, and this happened," Holmberg said.

The temperature in a locked car rises quickly. Experts said in 88-degree weather the temperature inside a car can shoot to 136 degrees in 40 minutes.

"We want the family to know, the YMCA, a community organization, we're here for them, so if they need anything in the future, we would like the family to give us a call," YMCA Vice President Roz Hamby said.

The medical examiner said before the baby's cause of death can be determine there needs to be further investigation and further studies.

KITV chose not to identify the mother of the baby.
