A 21-year-old woman died Friday afternoon after being run over by a bus in Kalihi, Honolulu Police Department officials said.

Police said a Roberts Tour bus struck a bicyclist attempting to cross Waiakamilo Road in a crosswalk at about 4 p.m.

HPD officials said the tour bus came to a stop about 100 feet from the intersection with the bike lodged underneath.

Major Thomas Nitta said the incident prompted police to remind everyone on the road to watch out for others.

"For bicyclists and drivers, be aware of your surroundings," Nitta said. "Bicyclists should be aware of cars; and pedestrians, we need to share the road with everyone."

Police said the driver of the bus, a 72-year-old man, did not appear impaired and was cooperating with the negligent homicide investigation.

The bus driver was taken to HPD headquarters, where officers said they took a blood sample to determine if alcohol or drugs were factors in the fatal crash.
