An unattended cigarette started an Ewa Beach house fire that left a woman in critical condition, the Honolulu Fire Department said on Monday.

The fire broke out early on Sunday morning on Pohakupuna Road.

Judith Domingo, 70, was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters found her unconscious in a bedroom with a ladder nearby.

Domingo's son said she enjoys playing crossword puzzles, while smoking an occasional cigarette.

The fire caused about $85,000 in damage, fire officials said.
