HONOLULU -- An Alaskan trooper raised in Hawaii has been shot and killed in a small town in Alaska.Alaska State Troopers said a gunman ambushed two police officers in the small village of Hoonah, west of Juneau, on Saturday. The man then barricaded himself inside his home before surrendering to police on Monday morning, troopers said.Officer Matthew Tokuoka and Sgt. Anthony Wallace died in the attack.Tokuoka was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who grew up in Hawaii. He is survived by his wife and two young children, who were at the scene of the shooting.
A man charged in the slayings of the officers was accused of attacking the same two officers last year, court documents showed.Assault and other charges filed at the time against John Marvin Jr. were dismissed in December. The prosecutor assigned to the case declined Monday to say why the charges were dropped.Amy Williams, an assistant district attorney, said her office is "reeling" from the shootings late Saturday and she isn't prepared to talk about last year's case.Court documents show both officers were injured in the August 2009 attack after they responded to a call from a woman who said Marvin entered her home without permission. Records say the attack ended when Marvin was subdued with a stun gun.Marvin, 45, surrendered Monday following a long standoff with authorities.
