HONOLULU -- The state Department of Transportation is hoping its new website will help motorists navigate traffic when thousands of University of Hawaii-Manoa and private school students go back to class this month.Transportation officials hope drivers will spend a minute on the computer before hitting the road."For the first time we have real-time information, where people can access, see the cameras, how long it's going to take them on the road," Department of Transportation Director Brennon Morioka said. The website is called GoAkamai.org. It cost $1.25 million. The site draws images from many of the traffic cameras, including new solar-powered cameras to give drivers a better view of the roads."They're going to be able to make a better decision before they get into the car before it's too late. Little earlier or later, that's going to help manage congestion," Morioka said.Officials said that while it is not the perfect solution, it can help in the long term to help motorists plan trips better. So far, crews have installed 72 new Doppler radar cameras along the H-1, H-2 and Moanalua freeways. There are plans to spend $40 million more over the next four years, DOT officials said."We think it's going to be a tremendous benefit to public, and as we expand it in Oahu, and neighboring islands, we'll see people having a much easier time on the roadways," Morioka said.
