HONOLULU -- A 22-year-old Kilauea man died in an early-morning crash on Kauai Friday.

The crash happened at about 12:35 a.m. on Kuhio Highway in Kalihiwai, police said. Alexander Texeira was driving his pickup truck north when his vehicle went off the road, climbed an embankment and flipped over several times, police said.

Texeira, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck, Kauai police said.

Paramedics treated Texeira and took him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Texeira is the 10th traffic fatality on Kauai so far this year compared to six at this time last year. That makes five traffic-related deaths in the state in the past week. There were three on Oahu in the past seven days and one on the Big Island early on Friday morning.
