Big Island police said they believe speed and alcohol were factors in an early Friday morning crash that left a 20-year-old Kona man dead.

Police received a call about the crash at about 12:45 a.m. on Palani Road near Konalani Street.

A two-door sedan ran off the road and down an embankment about 150 feet, ejecting the driver, police said. He was not wearing a seat belt, they said. A 35-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car did have her seat belt on.

Police identified the driver as Chayson K. E. Matsuoka, of Kailua-Kona.

Paramedics treated the two people and took them to Kona Community Hospital.

Matsuoka was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. The woman was treated and released from the hospital.
