Police said it appears that speed and alcohol were factors in a motorcycle crash that killed a 42-year-old Keaau man in Pahoa on the Big Island.

Emergency teams responded to the crash shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Ainaloa Drive and Macadamia Street.

The driver was driving south on Macadamia Street when he drove into a utility pole, police said.

Paramedics treated the man, who was wearing a helmet, and took him to Hilo Medical Center, where they said he died at about 1:45 a.m. Thursday.
