City Awards $5.5 Million Rail Station Contract
Company To Work On 3 Leeward Oahu Centers

HONOLULU -- Honolulu has awarded a $5.5 million design contract for three stations along the city's planned commuter rail line.Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced Wednesday that the contract went to HDR/Hawaii Pacific Engineers. Omaha, Neb.-based HDR acquired HPE in 2007.The city looks forward to working with the company to ensure the rail stations are easy to use, with attractive designs that embody the spirit of their communities, Caldwell said. The designs released by the city show some of the elements that the communities made input on, spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.The company will begin working on refining the designs. The design work can go forward before the environmental impact statement is signed off on.The stations to be located along Farrington Highway will serve West Loch, Waipahu Transit Center and Leeward Community College.Lester Fukuka of the firm's Honolulu office will serve as principal consultant.
